Not sure if this is the right section to be posting this but...
How can I subtley but effectively remind someone to pay for their items? I got a commission to draw 'a cool picture' which I did and mailed them it along with my statutory letter detailing that payment should be made within 10 days. Reasonable? I thought so, but I haven't heard a word from the customer despite the fact that they knew what I could do and knew what the price would be beforehand and promised to sort something out. I even showed the customer a scanned image (with 'SAMPLE' watermark) of what they would be getting and they said it was great and to proceed. So I did. This is over a week ago.
I must confess this is the part of the whole art commission thing I'm a bit vague about. Should I wait until I've got part or all of the money before I send out the work or wait?

Personally I would have made sure that the customer has paid up front within 7 days before I get the work started. That way the payment is over and done with. But then, those who've commissioned me so far have been friends [one of them is a member here], so I've not dealt with strangers before. Totally sucks that this person is not turning up with payment, because there should be a reason. I can remember having to deal with someone who bought something from me on eBay who didn't pay after nearly two weeks [after the first week I filed them], because they said their computer broke down after they won the auction. Then they started harassing me while the thing was in the mail over to the USA...but they haven't spoken to me since, neither have they given feedback. You might want to read this deviantART journal for further tips on commissioning.

That was pretty good. It just bugs me more because the giy is a boyfriend of a friend of a friend so he DOES know me (kind of). I'm just sick of folk saying 'do us a cool picture', not giving you a clue about what they want, then expecting it for free. I would not expect him to 'do a cool song' for me for nothing.

Oh man, people expecting you to make art for them for free, I've had my fair share of them, especially on DeviantART. I stopped doing requests because someone kept asking me for more free pictures right when I was in the middle of making one. He did it three times and then I just denied his third one. Then you get people who make up excuses to get free art in the form of an art trade like saying that they can't afford a commission. Ugh...
BTW I think I might move this thread because I think it's a bit off topic.

OK, I wasn't sure if it was indeed the right place to be posting it, sorry about that.
People also assume that cartoon-y stuff is frivolous and easy. I say unto them! - if it's that easy why don't you do it and you won't need to ask Stacey and me and all our talented chums) for handouts? If we did 'proper art' (ie. serious-looking buildings or bowls of fruit) there'd be no question of whether they were free or not - the customers would pay. Also, at the risk of insulting our own age group, young people are the worst for welching on payment. Mid 30s onwards are more decent about it.
I sent him a 'gentle reminder' reitorating what he is due me and what I've already sent him. If he welches again, I'll call his attention to the fact that I did clearly state that payment must be made within 10 days.

OK, Sunday morning and STILL no payment. Another reminder? People are annoying.

I'm sure Igor could think of plenty of ways to deal with this bloke. Muhahaha....
Seriously though, I think it's time to be more assertive, since being Mr. Nice Guy has proven a futile tactic. Some folks are just downright rude. You don't need this.
Well, if he doesn't want to get a nice peice of work from you, then I feel sorry for him. (Btw, you don't complete and send the work until you get payment, correct?)

I did this drawing and sent it before I revised my payment options. My previous payment plan didn't take useless welchers into account when I devised it. Sadly, they spoil it for the rest of us honest folk.
That guy is just a useless so-and-so! STILL no payment - I guess this serves me right for trusting people. It was only 20 quid anyway, I guess that's too much for some people to bother with - oh the anger!

This is his response when I finally emailed him after sending two reminders.
'yeah i did get them sorry ive been a bit busy i dont know if i am going to use them but i will still pay for it if you want '
The off-handed cheek of some folk! Of course I still want, otherwise I'd not have wasted my time on it! If it's inappropriate then he should have said so when I'd done the pencil sketch instead of telling me to go ahead. Anyone think I'm being unreasonable?

What a freaking *bleep, bleep, bleep*!! And he's not even sure if he even wants them after all! What a waste of time! I hope you don't have to deal with any more idiots like this! It sounds like he's not clear that payment is a requirement, rather than a preference. Next time this happens, I'd have them hung, drawn, squeezed, quartered, plugged, thumped, wrapped, and sent parcel-post.

"IF YOU WANT" ? Is he mad? You spent time and talent to make them, of course you deserve a remuneration! There are such imbeciles in this world...

"...if you want"
Oh gawd, how low can a commissioner get? This was a commission, not a goddamned request! And he said he might not use your artwork...?
Good gravy -__-;

Your all with me then! His attitude is akin to me taking a shirt from a shop without paying on the basis that I might not wear it! Of course it bugs me he's maybe not using it, but the fact remains I sent hims the rough - he said it was great, so I proceeded and spent time and effort on it. If it's not what he wanted he should've said so instead of the annoying phrase 'draw me a cool picture' - so "#$^@$ vague, he deserves what he gets. I'll post it on DA maybe, when I get the money (HA!)
Either way this has taught me a valuable lesson!
'If you want indeed' how patronising. Here's the best bit, he calls himself 'Bano' after 'Bono' the music chappie. How original. That'd be like me calling myself, er, Brian Falseman after Brian Trueman for example!

So would an over-protective Nanny come to think of it. 'I'm not 'aving you taking my (insert my pet-name here)'s noice pictures for nothing! I'm going to smack your legs!'
