That's awesome! ;D
Btw, I'm very interested in your career as an artist. How did it start, and all? And how many projects do you have going, how known are you for your work, etc?

Those adverts drive me batty! There was one that was just for train stations where they copied Thomas the Tank engine. I really wanted to steal that poster, but yeah I think I'd get caught, so I left it. I dunno I prefer them say over the numerous 'I'm 75 but I look 20, cos I use FACEGUNK!' and the insurance / sue people adverts. totally off topic....

Is it there then? It is on my MacLocal McAberdeen copy. Just got a phone call from a company offering cheaper line rental, so I guess I must be 'in the business' so to speak. Now, if only thise 'phone calls were fora actual orders, or people wanting to buy my splendid;y cerebral high-brow shiny comic....

Sorry, missed that post earlier ShyChick. Well, I'm not a full-time artist I have a day-job totally unconnected to artwork, but I do drawing in my spare time and did a cartooning class at a community centre recently. Unfortunately, it was arranged so that very small children who can't even draw (with one or two exceptions) were working with me constantly asking me to draw brand names and cars, completely oblivious to the complexities of character design, colour etc. Sorry, but it still bugs me this obsession with cartoons and the under-10s. I did an animation course a few years back but it was very badly organised and although I enjoyed living out of town for a while, there were times when I got quite ill and the course was not very well organised. My qualification has not helped me in getting a relevant job, so I set up my own business least year. Any money I make from commissions goes into publishing my comic book. AGAIN unfortunately, people seem to either ignore the comic or nick it, (although I have sold quite a few, no doubt to completely the wrong audience) much in the same way that they want paintings, drawings etc for nothing. I get tired of messages from folk saying 'Hey will you draw me a cool picture?' I'll respond 'Yes, certainly. WHAT DO YOU WANT? Here's the price list.' Not only are they reluctant to pay but they don't even know what they're after! I mean, if you got a man in to fix your plumbing, you pay him right? You get someone to repair your car - he gets paid. So why not cartoonists? Answer - they don't do 'proper' art. Same with the comic. I spend hours, days months even, writing, sketching, colouring, raising money to put the thing together and all I get is 'Oh that's good! Great stuff (but I won't buy it or read it) or '1.50's a bit expensive (for 24 x A5 glossy full-colour hand-drawn pages). Children (and occasionally adults) pointing to a work of art that could have taken me 2 or three days to complet and blithely asking 'can I have that?' really annoy me too. When I say, they can't simply have it but are quite welcome to buy it, they change their minds. Either that or they'll asking me to whip up another one, completely free of charge in 10 minutes!
Sorry about the tone of the latter half of that explanation, but I needed to make my position clear on this matter. Ever seen 'One Froggy Evening'? I bought a DVD with that cartoon on it yesterday and I feel like the man trying to show off the frog when I'm trying to sell my comic sometimes!
Almost anyone can become a talented artist, but sadly, not everyone makes it. Hopefully now that I have myself visibly advertised, means that I'll get more bites. Of course, living in MacAberdeen where if something hasn't got Scottish terriers, oil or shortbread about it, it's considered strange and unnatrual, doesn't help.
My blog on DeviantArt and MySpace is updated regularly about stuff like this.

I'm very sorry to hear that, Gaston. I didn't realize you had it so rough. You are an extremely talented artist, and I don't find that a bit fair. I mean, I think it's only fair that you get paid for your efforts; you do put a lot of work and care into your stuff after all. I actually have a best friend who is an aspiring manga artist, and she is in the exact same boat as you.
Now, I feel very guilty; I sincerely appolgize if I have insulted you in my earlier PM. The honest truth is, I personally have no beef with paying for a requested drawing; it's not a question of whether or not I think it's "worth it." It's my parnoid parents, in a nutshell. They not only think I'll get robbed or cheated if I make any sort of financial deal with strangers online- and yes, I can certainly understand where they are coming from; but I am cautious, and they refuse to understand that about me- but they think EVERYTHING is a waste of money. And I just know they wouldn't understand if I were to buy a drawing; to them, that would be the cheapest of the cheap. And the thing is, it's not like I tell them every single purchase I make, but they are very nosey... and when they find out about something I bought- even in a mall- that I didn't tell them about, they accuse me of being sneaky. Can you believe that?
I hope you forgive me for my total lack of ignorance, but how exactly does a comission work, btw?

I hope you forgive me for my total lack of ignorance, but how exactly does a comission work, btw? It's basically where another user [usually from a site like DeviantART] pays you to make an artwork for them. I've had a few commissions myself within this year, which is pretty good I suppose, because well, it's a better feeling to be paid by someone who knows you a bit rather than doing an art trade/free request with someone who's only just jumped on you. I really don't like the latter anymore, because I get like, one or two people who keep begging me for more while I'm in the middle of working on something for them, and they don't even comment or add it to their favourites or anything. As for art trades, I prefer to do that with friends rather than people I don't even know.

Gah, total *ignorance*, I meant, not lack of. Ok, thanks, Stace; that's what I thought it was. I certainly think it's a very fair and reasonable practice, though of course it all depends on who you are dealing with. Of course I know I can trust people like you and Gaston. Btw, Stace, out of curiosity, how much do you generally request? Gaston, I would like to formally re-open my former art request. How much will that be? (I live in Canada, so could you give me a conversion too, please?) Btw, what projects/series have you done to date?

If by that you mean how much I charge, I usually charge about ten quid tops, or five for something black & white, and maybe add a bit more if the artwork is traditional and being shipped. Thing is though I only take paypal [I'm gonna have to update this commission info thing one of these days] because it's a whole lot easier for me.

Here's the price list I generally give folk (it's actually much cheaper if I simply scan and email a picture to you, but then you're not getting it 'un your hands' so to speak. ------- A4 Pencil Sketch £2-5 A4 Pencil with detailed background £5-10 (cheaper with sparse or no background) A4 Digitally coloured print £10 A4 Hand-coloured (watercolour, inks, pencil) £15-20 ------
That's rough estimates, of course it depends on exactly what the client wants.
BTW don't apologise for 'insulting' me. You did no such thing! It's the people who assume they should get a copy of my splendifourous comic for nothing that bug me. I accept PayPal, HARD CASH Milord! or cheques denominated in pound sterling (which, I'm pretty sure IS possible from abroad). I used to pay for a LOT of eBay auctiuons by taking pounds to the travel agents, getting it converted into dollars and posting it overseas. It always worked.
Comic strips I draw:
Stan the Crow - (daily 3-panel strip, 7- panel Sunday strip) + some full-length colour strips. 1 animated 7-minuter AstroCat -10 or so, 30+ page, full colur strips - hand-painted (some under 'reconstruction'!) Snide 'n' Snout - Not a lot of strips to their own. Mainly guest 'baddies' for Stan the Crow Hungry Hyena - 2 colour hand painted strips + 1 animation. The Dya - 2 dozen 1-page strips + 1 feature-length Christmas special and 1- 3minute animation. The Bizarre World of Nelson - 2 dozen 1-page strips. April, May and June - 3 colour-strips (15 page approx. each) Captain Complaint - One 13 page strip
Plus various incedental sketches, paintings, framed stuff etc. Hope this clarifies.
Hope that clarifies

Um, do you take money orders? (You know, I have been thinking of opening me a PayPal account, just because it's what most people prefer. Only reason I haven't is because I've heard some bad things about it...) I am a bit confused what you meant about the last option. Btw, in return for sending me those eps in future, I would be glad to buy a copy of your comic as you suggested! So, you take requests/comissions on anything?
