I am delighted to find such an excellent site dedicated to Duckula on the "web".
Like I suspect most else here Duckula is almost certainly my all time favourite cartoon. How far do Duckula and I go back? Waaaaaay back. Like before I can even remember. My earliest memory is of my third birthday and it seems I liked Duckula even before then.
Then something strange happened. I started to find Duckula scary. I got the talking plush for Christmas when I was 4 or 5, and I was absolutely terrified by it! So obviously there were a few years there where I didn't watch it.
I got over being scared of it obviously, but I guess at one point I though Duckula was one of those things I would leave in my very early childhood like Postman Pat or Sooty. Then when I was 9, at the behest of my late Grandfather who told me how much he used to laugh when he watched the show with me, I pulled my Astro Duck and Lost City of Atlantis videos (ah, remember them?) down from a tall cupboard. I was astounded to discover how funny the show really was, probably better than anything I was watching at the time.
A year or so later Nickelodeon started showing repeats, and after that SkyOne picked them up. I collected as many episodes as I could either from TV recordings or second hand videos. By the time the DVDs came out I had managed to see almost every episode. Even so to have them all on an enduring and easily accessible form like three DVD sets rather than a dozen or more videos strewn all over the place was a relief.
At least since I've "rediscovered" Duckula when I was 9 I've never grown out of it. There may have been stretches in my life over the last 13 years when I wasn't actually watching it (although I can't recall any), but none where I turned my back on it. As far as I'm concerned it's not only one of the best cartoons ever produced for television, but one of the best comedies too.
