...when people will watch sitcoms (funny or terrible) but will never watch cartoons as they are dismissed as kis' stuff. It just annoys me when folk laugh soooo hard at rubbish 'jokes' but all they'll do is give a ploit 'hph!' for my benifit when viewing a very well-made and funny animated show.
Strange also how some folk will burst out laughing at a sitcom gag and wonder how the writers come up with these ideas, that was so well-observed etc. and I'm thinking to myself - 'Hang on that gag was done in Count Duckula about decade ago! Why wasn't it funny then?'
I enjoy cartoons and sitcoms, but there's not really been a lot in the last decade for me.

Yeah, sure! Most people thought that cartoons are for kids (except The Simpsons, Family Guy and stuff like that) and they call people that like them childish If they only knew ;D The first animated film was made for adults, and then there were cartoons like Felix the Cat or Betty Boop and Tex Avery's cartoons... Are those childish cartoons? Of course not! I think that Count Duckula is much more an adult cartoon than it seems to be BTW What is sitcoms

Short for situation comedies.
All these programmes you get worshipping the genius of how brilliant the comedy is annoy me too. Especially when the programme isn't actually that good. Duckula, Danger Mouse and Hugo are definately up there with Granville and Del Boy for David Jason's great comedy characters.
It also annoys me when people say that Tom & Jerry, The Pink Panther, Bugs Bunny etc. are kids TV shows! They were animated theatrical shorts! A- aimed at a broad audience and B- not on the telly!
Seems the only way you can have an 'adult' cartoon is to have something you could quite easily film in real-life. With swearing and sex. The Cosgrove Hall cartoons were animated sitcoms masquerading as kiddies' programmes! I, personally don't find The SImpsons that entertaining (except the early episodes, when it wasn't so rude or silly) and Family Guy is right down the pan.

I'm often frowned upon if I was to ever say that I liked cartoons far more than sitcoms , or basically any other kind of TV. People would expect girls my age to love stuff like Friends and Hollyoaks, both of which I think are rubbish, as well as soaps. Hell, I'd rather watch a cartoon than the news anyday.
What bothers me the most though is that people give me funny looks when I look around in the children's section in DVD stores, yet I can't get a DVD of anything above 15 cert without getting asked for ID

In Japan there are lots of animated movies and TV series made specifically for adult people; here in Italy some of these series are transmited only on MTV (there has been a mess a few years ago beetwen the public TV and anime fans, because of the horrid censorship made on some adult anime to make them suitable to children- but no one has the courage to touch the simpsons also here!). Last week I went to the cinema to see the last movie by the Ghibli Studio, "I racconti di terramare" (sorry I don't know the exact translation ): me and my friend were buried in a crowd of children, noisy and bored because they understood nothing of the complicated story...their parents probably took them there hoping to see something like Shrek

Personally I'm not to fond of 'serious' cartoons, but then I prefer funny live-action stuff to drama mostly anyway. Stacey you are a breath of fresh air! 'Hollyoaks' and 'Friends' are pure garbage! I don't see why folk like them so much! I personally never get any funny looks when I go to the childrens' DVD section. My last purchase was 'Count Duckula' series 2 and 'A Bit Of Fry and Laurie' series 3. I think most people appreciate my tastes as they are probably in the same boat as me. What I find very annoying is that The Pink Panther films are in the comedy section yet the cartoons are in the childrens' (though once I did see it in the comedy section, thank heavens. It was in Fopp), The Phil Silvers Show is in the comedy section, Top Cat is in the children' section, The Simpsons-comedy The Flintstones-children! Ren & Stimpy- comedy Loooney Tunes-kids! (even the ones with rating advising of content not suitable for children and aimed at collectors) The Flintstones and Top Cat were technically animated comedy shows as they were originally broadcast in prime time. Pink Panther and Looney Tunes were theatrical cartoons not aimed exclusively at children (Pink Panther smokes at the start of every episode!). Count Duckula, to be fair, was broadcast in children's programme block (Children's ITV) but by the late 80s cartoons had no hope of reaching an audience unless they were porportedly aimed at children. Of course the fact that the writing, comic skill and acting is far superior to most fashionable live action sitcoms (cough The Office cough) seems to be over-looked. Plus the fact that the main target for these shows are adults who grew up with the show as children and want to go back and get all the stuff they missed the first time. Another thing that hacks me off severely (sorry but I'm really getting into 'my area' here!) is when they take a cartoon and censor it to blue &%$#ery so they can stick it in a kids' slot. If you feel the need to censor the piece in order to show it to children, doesn't that tell you something? Maybe, just maybe, it wasn't meant for kids? A cartoon without excessive sex and swearing aimed at adults? What a radical concept! Yet it's fine to show Homer Simpson acting like an alcoholic on the cover of a children's comic. Mind you, the censors nowadays seem to suffer from extreme double standards. It's either one extreme or the other. The Ren & Stimpy box-set I get for CHristmas has the ending of the wild west episode complete shorn out! Many people (myself included) asked them why this was the case and they wouldn't budge saying it was 'immitable behaviour'. Look for this case on the internet, it's a good laugh if nothing else.

My parents think ANY form of animation is stupid- whether it's a kids' show, or even an adult-oriented show like The Simpsons or Familiy Guy. I personally think it's because some people have a VERY narrow mind-set, and can't- or refuse to- relate to the characters or situations simply because they are not flesh-and-blood humans who actually exist as real people in real-life, that they include situations that are nothing but downright stupid and immature. I guess my parents think like Ren (from Ren and Stimpy) does about cartoons- that they are merely 'puppets', in a sense. I mean, granted, these charcters don't exist in the physical world, but that doesn't mean they aren't fun, enjoyable, lovable folks who we can relate to in SOME way or another. Sure, the situations in cartoons are EXTREMELY far-fetched, to downright impossible and illogical, and even completetly retarded- and that's precisely what makes them so darn fun to watch!- but in EVERY cartoon you watch, you will find at least *something*, to however small a degree, that you can personally familiarize yourself with- be it how that character is feeling, their kind of relationship or interactions with other characters, personality traits, etc... just some of the many distinct aspects of humanity. And it's when we can identity with a character and/or that situation, more or less, that it really makes the world seem more alive and believable, and more enjoyable to watch. Cartoons are known for being over-the-top goofy, corny, crazy, rediculous, etc, but just because that world and those characters don't exist in the physical sense, they can inspire just as much- or even more- depth than any other sit-com or show.
I HATE soap-operas and Reality shows, myself. BOR-ING! So stiff and mundane.

I know what you mean! I hate soap operas too Thy are boring, lame, silly and perhaps more exaggerated. Talk shows, in the other hand, made me laugh at their silliness

I never really watched that show, don't really know much about it. The only soaps I'll wacth are Emmerdale and Coronation Street (and I'm going off Corrie now because of the overuse of the Connor family).
I don't see the point of reality shows, unless you count documentaries, because they are technically reality, I suppose. Here's the equation:
1. Take one bunch of idiots you wouldn't want to meet in a million years + one house with cameras in it = instant celebrities!
2. For 'celebrity' reality, simply repeat as above only use people whose mother's step-brother's ex-girlfriend once did a guest spot on The Bill in the mid 80s.
3. Over a large cash prize to the 1st couple of complete strangers who have sexual intercourse on live telly!
Seriously though, classic cartoon characters have far more personality and interest than a lot of live-action characters (who also don't exist in real-life anyway, though the actors do). I could write a thesis on the characters from Count Duckula for example but rubbish like the over-rated Catherine Tate I couldn't fill a page with!

Gaston, you should have seen what they have done to Sailor Moon...a shame!! A lot of anime that's shown over here is absolutely butchered because they're aired on kids' channels, namely One Piece, Naruto and Sonic X, but yet they never used to remove smoking scenes in Digimon [dunno if I should bring Tom & Jerry up while we're touching this subject]. You guys outside the UK should have seen what they did to Ninja Turtles [the old one] - they used to remove all the scenes involving Mike's nunchucks due to our laws back in the 80's, not forgetting the name change to "Hero" XD! I... HATE...shows like Big Brother! And I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here...god, need it remind me of when someone had to eat a rat tail? DX Oh well, it's a good thing my sister has her own room. It used to be a massive nightmare wanting to go to sleep as she was having the late night version on. But yes, Big Brother is one of the worst things I've ever watched.

Stacey, re. I'm a Celeb. - I thought that programme was not only awful, but also bloody cruel to animals. In what natural 'I'm-in-the-jungle-so-I'd-better-use-my-wits-to-survive' situation would require you to eat a rat's tail or lie in tank of snakes? Plus, I'm sure they killed the insects for entertainment. I thought we'd eveolved more since the Romans killed lions and crocodiles for fun.
I'm not a fan of Japanese animation, really, but the princable of censoring stuff just annoys me. Seems a rule of thumb that if it's drawn, it's for kids.
Case and point: how did 'Creature Comforts' get into the Comedy DVD section? It's as dull as hell!

Bah, just one of the many, many reasons why humanity sickens me. We act like barbarians, like Neanderthals, leaving our mark of so-called superiority and dominence on the world, lording it over our fellow creatures. We're so confident and arrogant that we kill and slaughter these INFERIOR lifeforms- who, after all, have no more feelings, rights, or real place on OUR planet than a peice of furniture- for mere pleasure and entertainment. Because you can't spell "slaughter" without 'laughter"! After all, we are acting within our rights as humans... because we have an extra thumb! GO, US! WHOO! Sorry for getting off topic there, just a little rant.
