I've always believed- well, know, lol- that "Duckula" is an ancient family name, and not his first name, dating back far before the Count ever got turned into a vampire ("The Rest is History"). I would guess that his first name hasn't been used since he was a mortal, all those centuries ago; ever since he's been a vampire, to the present, he's just been known as "Count Duckula." I would also go so far as to guess that Duckula cannot even remember his first name, the only reminder of his once-mortality having been wiped from his mind all those hundreds of years... and knowing Duckyboos, he probably isn't even aware that he ever has/had a first name in the first place. (Igor, who knows everything about his master's past, dating to before he turned him into a vampire, would know for sure, but I strongly doubt he'd ever mention it to the Count.)
So, my main question is this: Using your imagination, what do you think his name could have been? Ok, to put it another way for those who may go, "How the heck should we know? It was never even mentioned; it's just a cartoon!", what name do you personally like for him? XD
Myself, I've always been quite keen to the name Nigel, at least for him. (And we know from the ep "Lost Valley" that he hates that name, lol). But I dunno why, I just think that name suits him for some reason. It's very simple, mild-mannered, gentleman-like... which is how the very original Count was portrayed in "The Rest is History", and is more-or-less how he is now.
Ok, anybody else? XD

I really like the name of Nigel, Shychick, it sounds so British and it fits Duckula. However, we could choose a Romanian name, he is from that country after all! My favourites: -Neculai, the Romanian for Nicholas that means "victory of the people". -Yousef "may he extend". -Vlad, volod "rule" -Bogdan "given by God". -Dragomir "precious and peaceful". -I don't know why but I like Gavril "strong man of God". ...Well, I hope this could be useful to you. Also I have been wondering about Goosewing's first name, I only know that the "Von" part is used in aristocratic sure names from Germany... I guess?

I think that the right name should be Vlad, as Duckula is the ducky counterpart of Dracula...

Personally I think it's a Romanian name too...could be Slavic or anything for round that part of Europe [hell, Sviatoslav and Dmitiri are Russian spellings by the looks of things]. Haven't picked a favourite for Duckula yet, but a first letter that comes straight to mind is the letter P... As for Goosewing's, I'm taking a wild guess that he's called Abraham [just like the real Van Helsing...right?]. Welcome to the Duckyboos forums Serenity! Hope you have a nice time here.

Well, normally I would be inclined to agree that it probably would be Slavic or Romanian, if not for the fact that almost everybody on the show talks and even acts British. (Yes, I know that's because the show originated in the UK, lol). I mean, the way Transylvania is portrayed in the series, it almost seems more like old-fashioned Britian in many ways. (And- slightly OT- even while I say this, it is also interesting to note that Duckula has neither a Slavic or British accent, but downright American, lol! I always thought this was rather interesting, and have wondered why they made David Jason give him that particular voice.)
And I certainly agree that Gooswing's name could be Abraham, just like non-parodied counterpart!

Then you should keep with Nigel name that is Nigellus the Latin form of Neil and means "champion" or "cloud". Well I think that Transylvania is portrayed very close to the real one, believe me. Duckula's voice is great an funny! And I certainly agree that Gooswing's name could be Abraham, just like non-parodied counterpart! Allow me to be OT: have you ever read Dracula, the original novel? Despite Dr. Van Helsing is portrayed as a wise man and genius, he is actually, ( let's edit this) clumsy sometimes ;D

Oh, don't mistake me; I freaking love Duckula's voice too! ;D David Jason did a great job with that character; I'm just curious as to why they wanted him to have what seemed like a purely American voice in contrast to the more British feel of the show, particularly since he's the main character... though I heard it was something to do with Nickelodien funding the show, but I don't get that. Well, personally, I think it just suits his personality all the better. (Btw, have you ever noticed just how much his voice sounds like Bugs Bunny at times, with a dash of Master Shake from "Teen Aqua Hunger Force"? LOL). And, in reference to what you said about Helsing, are you serious? LOL! I admit, I never did read the book, but I have seen all the classic b/w Dracula movies- own them, actually- and he was portrayed as very intelligent. I've actually been meaning to read the novel. Interesting fact. Sorry to have gotten OT, btw.

Thank you Stacey! And congrats for this great site! I read somewhere that the production intentionally told David Jason to give Duckula an American accent, because they wanted to keep him "different" from the rest of the cast. In fact, he is not the cruel vampire he should be...

Interesting fact. Master Shake?!!! LOL, I though t that I had hear wrong but you noticed the similarity too! I like ATHF, well at least the first seasons. Please do read the novel, Shy! I had read it long ago and it changed my life, no kidding. And Dr. Helsing is intelligent and a serious character. However he did thing OC sometimes, perhaps is just my perception but I'll give you an example: Did you remember a scene, almost at the end on Bram Stoker’s Dracula movie by Coppola? -SPOILERS- In the scene Helsing is attacked by Mina, who is about to become a vampire, and then he protected himself by burning Mina’s forehead with a Holy Wafer. This was a very dramatic scene. Now I’ll tell you what happened in the novel: Mina was in her way to become a vampire and she was suffering, then here comes the professor saying something like (I can’t remember the complete dialogue): “You’ll be safe Mrs. Mina, We will do everything we could to keep that monster away from here… extended dramatic bla, bla, bla… Allow me to protect you” -He put a Holy Wafer in her forehead, praying- “In the name of Father…” *Then she started to cry in pain and despair, the Wafer burned her horribly, because now she was cursed and he knew that!* “I’m sorry Mrs. Mina, but you will have that mark for ever, extended dramatic bla, bla…” *Me: "what the hell he did?! ha ha ha! LOL"* (sorry for that ) *Going back to topic: So you will keep with Nigel name? It sounds great and it has an interesting meaning!

I too like the name Nigel, Shy. It's just fitting and suitably ironic. Also, the name is used more than once - it's also the name of that brattish little boy in Castle Duckula: Open to the Public! So could its recurring status point us in the right direction? I really can't think of any other good names, apart from Gilbert, which is a personal favourite of mine.

I like to call him Mihai, it is Romanian for Michael... Oh the irony, poor Igor!

LOL, Mihai and Nigel! I can see both. It probably should be Vlad, but both of those are great. Especially Nigel, since I can just see the fit he'd throw over it, hehehe.

In The Great Ductective, when Igor is disguised as Great Aunt Gretchen, he calls Goosewing "Erich". Could it be Goosewing's first name or did Igor make it up on the spot? I think Erich suits Goosewing!
(Dr Erich Von Goosewing)
